Real Staff Development

Posted on: December 27, 2010

A media specialist had a list titled REAL STAFF DEVELOPMENT stuck to his computer.

  • Hooking up laptop projector
  • Google Docs
  • Scanners
  • Airliners
  • Basic photo editing
  • Managing email
  • Group emails
  • Creating a PDF
  • Accessing resources and stuff right in front of your nose

Media specialists, especially building level specialists, are ideally suited to help teachers become comfortable with these basic needs that they are often too busy  learn or too frazzled to  remember  Media specialists know their staff and are tuned into unique learning styles and needs.  With district staff, funds and staff development training often targeted at district-wide initiatives and big projects media specialists are ideally suited to meeting “real” day-to-day needs.

MaryAnn Bell’s Belltones columns about how teachers are (and aren’t) using technology provide some insight into the real needs.  Doug Johnson’s The Why, What, How and WHO of Staff Development in Technology and my staff Development articles provide another look at WHY Staff Development is still an important ESSENTIAL role.

Helping busy teachers is an ideal opportunity  for innovations and for becoming involved, appreciated and indispensable!
